Hy-Mark Home Comfort had some special guests today…and they came hungry! Hy-Mark Home Comfortwas a stop on “Residential Construction Day,” a field trip for Grade 12 students to gain an understanding of life in the residential construction industry and the skilled trades.

Thirty-five construction students from the Upper Grand District School Board enjoyed one of our famous Hy-Mark Home Comfort barbeques with our team, and got a grand tour of our warehouse. They were also able to ask questions to our plumbers and HVAC technicians about what school is required to get licensed in the trades, what kind of salaries they could expect, and what an average day in the life of a tradesperson is like.

The day, which was organized in conjunction between the UGDSB, the Career Education Council and the Guelph & District Home Builders’ Association, included a tour of Habitat for Humanity’s Cityview Village site, as well as the Granite Homes award-winning design studio and Gemini Homes’ newest subdivision.

Hy-Mark Home Comfort wanted to get involved with the event because we believe getting young people interested in the trades is very important. In Canada, there is a nation-wide deficit of skilled trade workers. Estimates say one million new workers will be needed by 2020, and we are currently not on track to meet that target. A large part of this problem is that students are often pushed to go to university, and not given any real exposure to the wealth of high paying, high skilled trades jobs available.

We at Hy-Mark Home Comfort are doing our best to be part of the solution by offering industry support to school boards and associations who are promoting careers in the trades. Here’s looking forward to Residential Construction Day 2018!
